The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun.
The American biologists discovered microRNA, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in gene regulation.
Even though all cells in our body have the same genes, different types of cells, like muscle and nerve cells, perform different functions.
How do these differences arise? The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows cells to "switch on" only the genes they need.
If gene regulation goes awry, it can lead to serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, or autoimmunity.
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace, while a memorial prize in economic sciences was added in 1968.
