https://getconnectedmedia.com - We love big solid-state drives, and we cannot lie! They are the best value upgrade that every computer enthusiast can agree on. Your computer boots faster, your apps snap open, and your system becomes much more responsive. So, when we were asked to review the Samsung 870QVO solid-state drive, we were quite excited.
The Samsung 870QVO is a 2.5 inch SATA III solid-state drive. It comes in sizes ranging from 1TB to a monstrous 8TB. Starting at $179 CAD, the ability to bring larger sizes at more reasonable prices is due to Samsung's use of newer QLC NAND flash memory. This new memory is denser and allows four bits of information per cell, hence the 'Quad' in 'Quad-Level Cell (QLC).' It's cheaper to manufacture and will enable solid-state drives to begin to match conventional drives in storage capacity. While there is a premium in price, often times the cost to upgrade to a higher CPU or more RAM is better spent on a solid-state drive.
Because these drives are shipping in larger sizes, we were eager to see if they would meet the standards needed to be part of our video production workflows. Can these big drives keep up with GetConnected's high data rates and 4K video production? Are they better suited to everyday workloads as an upgrade to older desktops and laptops? Let's find out!
