What is latency in music? In this video, I will explain what audio latency is and why it's important. As a music producer, you need to know what audio latency is because it will affect your recordings.
In this video, I'll be explaining latency and how to fix latency in FL Studio 20, but this same principle will apply to all daws out there. When you add synths and processing to your sounds your computer's CPU will have to do more work, and this introduces more latency into the system. When it comes to audio and music production, latency is basically the time it takes from when you input a signal, like a midi keyboard, recording with a microphone or whatever, and until it emerges out from your speakers. This latency, which is basically the processing time of your computer, will introduce some lag into the system, and this can make it especially difficult to do live recording and such because it will mess up your accuracy and make everything get out of sync.
A very fast computer will typically provide less latency than an older and slower computer. That said, there are many things you can do to reduce the latency of your system.
You can adjust the buffer settings to reduce the audio latency in FL Studio, Ableton or any other daw out there. If it gets too low though, then your computer's CPU might not be able to cope and you'll get crackling sound, etc. It's therefore always a good idea to record early on before you add tons of CPU-hungry VST and effects.
