Sangay Volcano Expedition Summary - Pyroclastic Flows and Drone Survey
8-day expedition to the remote erupting Sangay volcano in Ecuador back in January 2020. We trekked through untouched jungle covered in muddy ash from the eruptions, across a narrow ridge with recent landslides on either side, and along the lahar-ravaged Rio Sangay river to our camp for several nights on a ridge opposite the active pyroclastic flow channel to observe the action...at least during the 30 mins or so of somewhat clear views we had per day between the mostly rainy and foggy conditions - this is the very edge of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest - an epic adventure!
