In this video, I will share my method of drawing and painting a magnolia flower requested by YOU, my wonderful subscribers. These are beautiful and exotic flowers if you are lucky enough to have them in your garden. You can play with the shapes of the petals and have them twist and turn. I incorporated all the pink colors of Spring and even a little touch of Burnt sienna for the leaves and branches, which can be quite thick and hefty for such a beautiful, delicate-looking flower! Nature isn't she wonderful?

I Create a color swatch for every painting to see what colors will look best together and appeal to me.

I used one brushstroke for both the petals and the leaves here. Use the side of your brush, or the "belly" to achieve the wide leaves and petals; for the petals, you can also use the tip of your brush to create the tin top of the petal.

This is primarily a wet-in-wet technique to blend colors, including Quin Magenta, greens, and a bit of burnt umber. This makes a beautiful floral color palette.

TIP- Vary the values of the paint to get an interesting painting; the more water, the lighter the value, and feels like its farther away and in the background. The more paint, the darker the value, and the more it pops forward into the foreground. Adding this simple technique can take your paintings immediately to the next level!

My paper today is a beautiful and thick @arches, Cold Press, link below, 140# with a lot of texture.

I thought it might be fun to make this little practice painting, personal notes, swatches and brushstroke reference available for you in my Etsy shop!
