3ds Max 2017 viewport bug

This bug is driving me insane. I've tried updating my drivers, software and fiddled around with all sorts of settings. Some scenes never get this problem and in some I can never get rid of it again.

The bug usually happens when orbiting the view or when just clicking on the viewport background (to deselect current selection, it's a very ingrained habit). In order to get the view back, the only way is to change the viewport to a different view first.

Needless to say, when doing any sort of precision work, constantly losing the view and having to navigate back in to where you were is super distressing and frustrating. Does anyone have a solution or know how to avoid it?
