Thank you for watching!
Donza is a jacket which was often worn by a fisherman and a farmer. For this video, I used a catalogue from an exhibition about Donza which was held by Fukuoka City Museum in 2005 as a reference of the Sashiko patterns. This exhibition featured Donza from fishing areas rather than farming areas.
Unlike the northern part of Japan, the climate of the south western part of Japan was mild and cotton was more accessible.
The main purpose of Sashiko in the area was not mending or reinforcing like I did in this video, but keeping fishermen warm while on their boat.

Also, I found a thesis about Donza from Awaji island in English! There are some photos of their beautiful Donza in it.

For me, it's so interesting to see Hitomezashi from Shonai (in the north) on those Donza (in the west). I wonder how they learned to stitch Sashiko and how the patterns evolved like this?
I'd love to visit Awaji to see real Donza in person one day!
