Here's a further breakdown of the Filter options.
In "Laymans" terms:
Ratio determines how sharp the boost is
Threshold determines at what volume the boost happens
Attack is how immediate the boost takes place once the threshold is reached
Release is how fast the normal volume returns once the signal is above the threshold again
Output gain is just another way to change the overall level after it's been processed.
