Eats a leaf, looks like a leaf... NOT a leaf!

A seed, an ant, and a leaf are the starting points of our story.

Is that the case, though?

Each of these represents a stage in the same creature's life.

Deep within eastern Australia's woods, an Australian walking stick can be found. From the canopy above, a seed falls. It descends to their underground burrow carried by foraging ants.
They keep the rest intact while munching away on the filling cap.

However, this seed is a knockoff; in reality, it is an egg of an Australian walking stick insect!

It can be seen here next to a real seed that ants also brought into the nest. The delicious component of this genuine seed is known as the elaiosome, and the equivalent component on the egg is known as the capitulum.

To get that egg underground is a form of evolutionary adaptation.
