Most coatings are based on carbon based polymers. But Jason Benkoski of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics laboratory makes his coatings using silica derivatives. These have an extraordinary tolerance to high temperature, sunlight, and physical degredation, meaning they may well become the protective coatings of the future
