The Effects & Presets panel allows you to browse through and apply the various effects and animation presets that are built into Adobe After Effects.

To use them, start by right-clicking inside the Project window and choosing Import -- File from the menu that appears. Navigate through the dialog box to find the file you wish to import and press Open.

Create a new Composition with your newly imported file by either navigating to the top menu bar and clicking Composition -- New Composition or by pressing Command+N on your keyboard.

The various effects you can apply to a clip are located in the Effects & Presets panel located on the right side of the screen, to the right of the Composition window.

All you need to do is drag and drop an effect or preset from the panel directly on to your clip in the Composition window to have it apply to your selected clip.

In the panel located at the bottom of the screen (below the Project window and to the left of the Timeline) is a list of the parameters that apply to your clip in the Composition window. This is where you can make adjustments to the applied effect to help blend in your original footage with the new look that an effect or preset can create.

Also, above the Project window is the Effect Controls window, where you can also make adjustments to the amount of an effect that is applied to a clip.
