Neutral Milk Hotel were one of the most famous and influential indie bands of all time. Headed by Jeff Mangum, a genius songwriter and singer from Ruston, Louisiana, they released only two albums in their short career: On Avery Island and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. The band’s 2nd and final album has gained cult classic status over the last 2 decades for its surreal lyricism and fascinating subject matter. Many people believe that it’s about German diarist and historical figure Anne Frank. Songs like Two Headed Boy, Oh Comely, Holland 1945 and King of Carrot Flowers include references to the horrors of World War 2 and her short but influential life. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is famous for its fresh instrumentation and style, and it is considered one of the albums that began the indie folk/rock genre. It is responsible for the styles of bands such as The Decemberists and Arcade Fire.
Neutral Milk Hotel is famous for disappearing after they released their second album, which was an instant hit. They gained popularity from blogs and 4chan and eventually came out with an EP, Ferris Wheel on Fire, in 2011. Ferris Wheel on Fire is made up of older songs from the mid-90s. They toured for a while in the early 2010s as well, but announced in 2015 that were going to stop for the foreseeable future.
