Exchange Server communicates with clients, applications and other servers over a variety of network protocols such as HTTPS, SMTP, IMAP, and POP. Clients and application involve username and password based authentication when credentials sent over the network like a clear plain text. such sensitive information can be read by an attacker.
To secure these communications, the Exchange server uses an SSL certificate to encrypt the network traffic between server, clients and applications.
