Magnesium is involved in over 300 different cellular pathways which means if you don't have enough magnesium you will feel a difference. This wouldn't be a huge problem if magnesium deficiency was rare but that's just not the case. Estimates suggest that up to 50% of people have low magnesium levels in their bodies which means they may be suffering from any of the following symptoms:
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include:
Fatigue
Insomnia
Muscle cramps
Constipation
Depression
Decreased appetite
Headaches
Migraines
In addition to these symptoms, low magnesium also puts you at risk for developing the following medical conditions: diabetes, insulin resistance (and weight gain), and heart disease.
No matter how you look at it, there are a lot of reasons to replace low magnesium levels in your body.
What causes magnesium deficiency? Here are the top 4 causes:
#1. Stress.
#2. Diet.
#3. Prescription medications.
#4. Decreased stomach acid.
Want to test for magnesium? Unfortunately, the tests aren't very accurate but if you want to you'd need to look at serum magnesium and RBC magnesium. Between these two, RBC magnesium is slightly more accurate.
If you are trying to increase your total body magnesium you can do that with either supplements or with magnesium-rich foods. If you use supplements then magnesium glycinate is the best supplement form to replace whole-body magnesium.
If you prefer the food route then look for these foods which are all high in magnesium:
Pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, spinach, almonds, peanuts, black beans, edamame, peanut butter, .and potatos
