Ibelin is a wonderful ode, not just to the 25 year old who lived two different, entirely separated lives, but also to the power of community.

Ibelin Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Ibelin is a study in the importance of family, and we hear about multiple. Mats’ parents who attended the screening at sundance, along with this sister, hardly let go of each others’ hands, tears in eyes as the audience stood up to upload. You are also introduced to another family, a mother who could only communicate with her autistic son while playing World of warcraft. Other families who didn’t allow their children to play the game, fearing it would interfere with real life. The structures that make us, those that stop us, and others we must develop on our own.

Benjamin Ree steers away from making the film feel emotionally manipulative, in fact the tears only finally started to roll when the family walked up on stage for a Q&A. For an entende portion, he recreates Mats’ life through a secret blog, the family read after Matt's death, and allows us to get to know his protagonist beyond his affliction. He doesn’t think of 1989 just as the year he was born with a condition that wouldn’t allow him to experience life fully, but also as the year the Berlin wall came down.
