Dune 2 Arab and Muslim Themes?
Nasser Al-Reyess discusses the unexpected presence of Arab and Muslim motifs in the film. The main character, Timothée Chalamet, is named Al-Mahdi in Arabic, referencing the Islamic figure believed to save the world. The Fremen, the movie's people, are depicted praying with their faces on the ground, resembling Islamic prayer. While acknowledging potential stereotyping, Nasser also highlights similarities between the struggle for spice control and historical resource conflicts, such as oil.
