Fish tank talk to add to the script:
Ok, so I noticed my betta mushu eating something funny this morning, turns out it was a dead cardinal tetra. I took the dead cardinal out and done a water change and gravel clean! My question is: do I need to medicate as a preventative? Some history: I had treated the tank with paragard for 21 days which ended on Christmas Day because my betta wasn’t eating and suspected velvet! He is better now and the fish were fine yesterday! I did a weekly water change yesterday and every thing was fine! Should I just keep an eye or medicate to be sure?
Personally I'd keep an eye on him and not medicate if not totally necessary. .your tetra could have passed for multiple reasons. I have watched my betta attack tetras and bite chunks out. If you tetra passed from parasites then it could be bad that the betta was eating it but it could also just be stress from water change. Don't stress your fish with meds unless they need it.
So I Need Some Help, Anyone know how to report this to get something actually done to help these fish? This is the Walmart in Lake City, Fl. (Sorry for the glare, I tried my best to cover it. photos are dated.)
I decided I’d take a look at the fish I while I was in the store. I first started out the ones in the tank only to be greeted by disappointment. Looked like the oscars had ick and spread it to the rest of the fish. I only say it started w/ the oscars because they were the worst. I snap some pictures of them and walked over to the bettas, only to be more out raged. A lot of their bettas were living in filthy (probably their own waste) water. One was so bad you could barely see the fish and it it barely had any water. None of the tanks looked like they had been cleaned for weeks. I walked back over to the oscars and at that time one of the employees had the audacity to ask if I wanted to buy a fish... Poor fellow was not expecting me to snap (I know it’s not his fault, but I couldn’t help myself & I did apologize to him) I pointed out the fish had ick, the bettas were living in nasty water, and something needed to be done or the fish would eventually die.
He said he’d get a manager for me and surprisingly he did instead of running and not coming back like I thought he would. He came back with a manager but that manger wasn’t over it that section and the one who was would be out till Tuesday so he talked to me instead. They said they’d put a sign up that the fish were sick & not to be sold and told me that they’d get them treated and thanked me for pointing it out. I thought all was said and done with but as I walked away I ran into the employee who asked if I wanted to buy a fish and he stopped me and thanked me and gone on to tell me that he walks past the fish all day and that they’ve had a case of ick before 3 times while he’s worked there, but he didn’t notice them having it now (how do you not notice??) and assured me again that it’ll be taken care of. Since they seemed concerned and actually talked to me I gave them a chance to take care of it without blasting them.
I returned to the store and of corse if you’re anything like me you know I had to check the fish. NOTHING had changed, besides you know the growing supply of ick on the fish and the bettas continued to live in their own waste. Oh and there was also no sign up and the water didn’t look treated at all. But this time I just took more pictures of the sorriness and didn’t waste my time with the lies. I gave them one more chance since they did say the manager over the section wouldn’t be in until Tuesday.
I had to go in to pick up some critter food. Once more you already know I walked my butt right over to the fish. THEY STILL HAD ICK and there was still no sign. A lot of fish were gone, I’m pretty sure the oscar who had the ick the worse died because he also lacked a tail fin (it was the first Oscar pictured, I felt so bad for it), my guess is a lot of fish were gone because they died from it, they only removed the real bad once, they kept selling the fish, or all of the above. The tanks were even filthier so obviously they still weren’t cleaning the tanks. ALL of the bettas were gone though. Not sure if they did away with them or what.
