Joining us today is Hannah Wilson a PhD student at Nottingham Trent University. She is a student of Holocaust Memory and blogger for the British Association for Holocaust Studies. She received her Masters degree from the University of Haifa, Israel and has previously worked as a research assistant at the archaeological excavations of Sobibor and Treblinka Death Camps.

In early 1943, Jewish prisoners at the Sobibor Extermination Camp became concerned as they sensed that killing operations there were slowing down. They had learned that another camp (Belzec) had been dismantled and all surviving prisoners liquidated. In response to this, the Sobibor prisoners organized a resistance group. In late September, this group was augmented in numbers and military training skills by the arrival of some Jewish Red Army POWs. The prisoners planned an uprising following the murder of key German camp officials. On October 14th 1943 many of the approximately 600 prisoners left in the camp, initiated a revolt. The prisoners killed several key German personnel and some of the non-German guards. With some prisoners now armed and with the remaining Germans lacking leadership, around 300 prisoners succeeded in breaking out of the camp to the forest beyond. Hannah will talk about these dramatic events, focusing on the women involved and indeed the role of prisoners as workers in a death camp. She will also talk about the legacy of the uprising and it's place in Holocaust memory.
