Strengthening core muscles is an important part of dryland routine in competitive swimming. Having a powerful core will make you a faster and better swimmer. Why so?
It gives you a strong platform from which you can pull, push and kick through the water, and also helps you keep your body properly aligned in the water.
For core training many top swimmers use a gym ball, also known as a Swiss ball, during their dryland programme. The instability of the ball causes the swimmer’s body to respond, which helps to develop balance, core strength and flexibility.
This video workout includes exercises, which require the swimmers to engage their core. Make at least 12-15 reps of each exercise. Do 3-4 sets, taking a break before each set.
Make sure that you use a gym ball of the correct size. You may ensure that when you sit on an inflated ball, your knees are bent at a 90 degrees angle.
