Here’s what’s open (and closed) on MLK Day 2022.
The continued spread of Omicron and the uncertainty it has created has stressed people out in record time. MLK Day, however, offers some people the chance to catch their breath. As the nation celebrates Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., government organizations will largely be closed. But, assuming it’s safe (and supply chain issues haven’t resulted in empty shelves) if you've got shopping to do, it should be easy enough to complete.
Here's a look at what’s open and closed on MLK Day 2022 and a brief history about the holiday.
What is MLK Day?
Designed to honor Martin Luther King Jr., MLK Day became a federal holiday in 1983. It falls on the third Monday of every January. (New Hampshire was the last state to adopt it as a paid state holiday in 1999, replacing the state’s optional Civil Rights Day.) It was the first federal holiday in the U.S. to honor an African American.
Are banks open on MLK Day?
They’re not. Because MLK Day is a federal holiday, banks will be closed. You can, however, still use ATM machines to get cash or put money into your account.
Will there be any mail delivery on MLK Day?
Not from the U.S. Postal Service. It, too, observes MLK Day as a federal holiday. However, UPS and FedEx will both remain open, so if you’re expecting a package, it will likely arrive on time (though weather delays could be a factor this year). In addition, all of their drop off locations will have normal hours.
Is the stock market open on MLK Day?
The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are all closed. They'll reopen on Tuesday.
Are schools open on MLK Day?
Let the kids sleep in! Most K-12 schools, colleges, and universities don't hold classes on this day.
