Tsuchigumo in mythology
Over time, the type of monsters began to be called tsuchigumo
They appeared in the form of creatures with the faces of demons, bodies like a tiger, the limbs of spiders and huge clothes. They all lived in the mountains, tied travelers with webs and ate them.
In the Notes on Tsuchigumo, written in the 14th century, monstrous Tsuchigumo appeared in the capital. The mid-Heian era commander Minamoto no Yorimitsu, known for the murder of Shuten-dōji, at the request of his subject Watanabe no Tsuna, traveled towards the Rendai Field, in the mountains north of Kyoto, where they encountered a floating skull. Yorimitsu and those who found it suspicious went after the skull and arrived at the old estate, where monsters appeared and mocked them. When dawn came, a beautiful woman appeared in the room, who was going to outwit them, but Yorimitsu, not being deceived, cut her with his katana, and the woman disappeared, and only white blood remained on the floor. Following this trail, they ended up in a cave in the mountain niches, where there was a huge spider, which was the embodiment of all the monsters that had appeared earlier. At the end of a long battle, Yorimitsu cut off the spider's head, and 1990 heads of the people he had eaten fell from its torn stomach. Countless small spiders scattered from the sides of the tsuchigumo. Following them, Yorimitsu found about 20 more skulls.
