The tech industry is buzzing that Intel just killed off their Optane persistent memory technology, but the truth is a little different. Intel certainly is eliminating the Optane division, as disclosed in their recent financial statement, but the Optane products will likely live on for the duration of the 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable Processor line, known as Ice Lake. Rumors suggest that Intel has a stockpile of Optane memory chips, and the technology works great as a way to expand Ice Lake system memory. Sure, the next generation will likely rely on CXL for “big memory” expansion, but Optane PMem still presents an interesting value proposition today, and for the next few years!
