Rock ’n’ roll is at its best when it’s having a little fun. UK duo Wet Leg epitomizes that all the way down to their smirk-inducing name. Shallow as their discography may be (the band has only released two songs so far), there’s a big buzz surrounding Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers’ two-year-old project formed in the Isle of Wight, the island off the south of England that they call home. Funny turns of phrase and pop-culture references abound in “Chaise Lounge” (“mummy, daddy look at me / I went to school and I got a degree”) and “Wet Dream,” in which a muse is seduced by the prospects of watching a Vincent Gallo flick on DVD. With its thrumming bass line, jagged guitar refrain, and lurid laughs, “Chaise Lounge,” was a debut single so hot that it helped the IDLES disciples earn a deal with Domino Records, home of Arctic Monkeys and Blood Orange. Hilariously on brand, Wet Leg’s formation took place on a ferris wheel. “We agreed on the premise of our band there and then: as long as you’re having fun, then everything will be alright,” says Teasdale, who handles the majority of the singing. When Chambers starts ripping the lead riff on “Chaise Lounge” while at the same time doubling Teasdale’s vocals, you can see where the hype is coming from. The great thing about being a Wet Leg fan right now is it’s easy to learn all their lyrics. The hard thing is waiting for the next bop to arrive.
