Alakol is a bitter-saline drainless lake of Kazakhstan, located in the Balkhash-Alakol depression, which is on the border of Abay and Zhetysu regions,[2] in the eastern part of the Balkhash-Alakol basin in southeastern Kazakhstan. To the southeast of the lake is the Dzungarian Gate Pass. It is known as a "healing lake".
On the western shore of the lake are the resort villages of Akshi and Koktuma (about 60 km from the Kazakh-Chinese border). About 15 km east of Kabanbai is the Barlyk-Arasan balneological resort with the Dorozhnik rehabilitation center for cosmonauts. The sandy wasteland Barmakkum adjoins from the northeast, but there are also mineral springs on its outskirts.
