Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip fired over 70 rockets into southern Israel on Wednesday injuring five people, according to the Israeli military. Israeli jets and tanks targeted rocket launching sites in northern Gaza in response. This animation explains the types and ranges of Qassam rockets used by Hamas. Qassam rockets are made from common civilian products. They are propelled by a mixture of sugar and potassium nitrate, a commercial fertilizer. The warhead is filled with TNT and urea nitrate, another common fertilizer. Qassam rockets have a range of 5km to 20km depending on their class.
