Why You Get a Brain Freeze & Tips #shorts

Dr. Janine shares why you get a brain freeze and tips for how to handle it. She explains that this phenomenon is called sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia, or ice cream headache. Brain freeze affects the vascular and nervous systems at the same time. An ice cream headache is when something extremely cold hits the roof of your mouth dropping the temperature dramatically. The blood vessels constrict then reopen quickly as the roof of your mouth warms up triggering the pain signal to the brain. Dr. Janine explains that only about 50% of the population gets them and it is generally those prone to migraine headaches. Dr. Janine suggests rubbing the roof of your mouth with your tongue to warm it up. She also suggests when eating ice cream or icy drinks try not to let them hit the roof of your mouth.
