Why I'm choosing AlmaLinux | R.I.P. CentOS | Legacy LSI driver support
This past Monday, April 15th, 2024, the AlmaLinux project announced the release of AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta. As I was reading through the announcement, I noticed their statement, "Renewing support for upstream deprecated hardware." As I looked into it, sure enough, they are enabling the LSI driver support for some of the legacy LSI SAS controllers!!! I had been hoping that either Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux would do this for 3 years, and it looks like my wish came true! In this video, I will install AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta and test out the LSI driver support for the LSI 9211-8i, 9201-16e, 9207-8e, and the Dell PERC H700, which is a LSI SAS2108 hardware RAID controller. Based on this, I'm going to migrate my CentOS 7 servers to AlmaLinux 9.4 once it is GA.
