On this day in 1945 Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed the independence of Indonesia, igniting the Indonesian National Revolution against the Dutch Empire. Here is Movietone’s report on the situation a little later in the year.
Batavia, Java has become the centre for the Indonesian Nationalist movement which is led by Dr Sukarno. Meetings at many places have called upon the people to unite against the Dutch and their allies. British troops have had to take a hand in dealing with the situation.
