Welcome back to the Great Central Reunification series - this is episide 10. We're at the GCR Reunification Weekend - Two Heritage Railways Coming Together for the first time, both with running passenger services.
We kick off at Ruddington Fields, the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre. This is the northern end of the GCR Reunification. The first loco hauled services since the railway reopened last year were running as far as the Loughborough A60 bridge. We've got the class 08 and class 20 on duty. As usual there is plenty to look around at Ruddington. We've covered the rebuilding of Great Central Railway Nottingham (GCRN) in previous episodes.
This special event is about the GCRN coming together with the Great Central Railway Leicestershire section. There are vintage rail replacement buses running to close the gap between the two railways. The weekend is to showcase one of the biggest projects in rail preservation.
We head to Quorn & Woodhouse to look at what is happening at Loughborough, Rothley and Quorn. A ride on Iris the DMU railcar, the Deltic, class 37 and some of the steam engines in service.
The railways are giving updates on the Reunification project, including talks, trackbed tours, loco shed and works tours.
The Great Central Railway Reunification Project aims to reconnect two sections of the historic GCR line between Loughborough and Ruddington, creating an 18-mile heritage railway—the longest in the UK. This ambitious plan involves reinstating 500 meters of missing track, including a new bridge over the Midland Main Line and restoring embankments and historic structures. Once completed, it will boost tourism, preserve British railway heritage, and support local economies. Funded by donations and driven by volunteers, the project is a major milestone in UK railway preservation.
