So you’ve learned about punches and kicks, props and weapons, and squibs needed to create a believable fight scene for film, but what’s next?

In this episode of how to, we are back on set of the sci-fi short film ‘New Human’ to show you how to shoot a fight scene after it has been properly staged.

We spoke to the film’s director, Fahad Vania, and fight choreographer, Eric ‘ET’ Miranda, to find out the best way to stage and shoot a fight scene.

While filming a sequence where the robotic villain battles the protagonist, the team had to strategize a way to film the scene, make it look believable, and showcase the robot’s inhuman strength as he throws the protagonist against the wall. To achieve this, they used wires to rig the actors and made sure to have multiple cameras with multiple angles rolling to capture all of the action. Having coverage is crucial when editing the scene together.

However, before they even get to the editing room, the director and fight choreographer work together to rehearse the motions and potential camera angles for a fight scene during pre-visualization. This preemptive step helps ensure that the scenes are shot in a timely manner and makes life easier in the editing room.

Follow along as we give you more tips on how to stage a fight scene.
