When you are ready to replace your dell optiple GX520 desktop hard drive, first decide if you are using sata or ide connections on your existing drive; this will help you know which type of hard drive to order for your #Computer upgrade.
Installing a new Hard Drive inside a Desktop Computer is much easier now than it used to be years ago. Most Drives now are are simple as connect them and load the operating system on them.

If you are installing a hard disk drive, you may choose to go with the same size and brand type drive if you like; I recommend though that you take this opportunity to upgrade your hard drive instead of using something similar.
Your Optiplex GX520 desktop supports both IDE and Sata type Drives considering the age of the computer. I would recommend using SATA type Hard Drive instead of IDE should there be an option with your desktop.

On the Dell Optiplex GX520 Desktop Computer, you have the option to go with ide or sata and whichever option you prefer is up to you; know that the power supply must offer the connection type required for that hard drive.
I recommend you choose a western digital type of hard drive, in particular the black brand which are designed for performance; these are your best hard drives to consider if you are using a sata like connection.
When wanting to install a new hard drive with speed in mind, you may then want to consider using a solid state drive instead; these are designed to be the fastest right now.
Next time you are needing to repair your desktop computer due to not booting up, simply installing a new hard drive and operating system on it does the repairs; I recommend a 500GB up to 2TB when installing a new hard drive.
