The best type of fabric to use for these zipper pouches is a light to medium weight cotton fabric such as quilting cotton. If you do use a heavier fabric for the outside, then use a light fabric for the lining. For beginner sewers, you will find that using plastic zippers is much easier as they have smaller heads.

Start by cutting 4 rectangles - 2 for the outside and 2 for the inside. You can make a pouch of any size. The zipper for your zipper pouch should be 1inch smaller than the width of the rectangles. (Remember that zippers are measured along their teeth.). In this zipper pouch tutorial, I cut my rectangles 7x5" to fit a 6" zipper.
