There are two terms which are often confused and used interchangeably--they are tracheostomy and tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a hole is made on the anterior of the neck. The incision creates a direct airway from the exterior of the body to the trachea. The main purpose of a tracheotomy is to aid with breathing.
What is a tracheostomy?
Tracheostomy is the name of the procedure which creates the hole in the trachea.
The procedure allows the person to bypass the nose and mouth and breathe through an inserted tube. The tube is called a tracheostomy tube.
How to use the words?
To use the words correctly, a person would say he is having a tracheostomy procedure to receive a tracheotomy.
Simply tracheostomy is the name of the procedure, and tracheotomy is the name of the hole in the neck. The name of the tube which goes into the hole is called a tracheostomy tube. #trach #lifewithavent
