Bolotnik is an evil spirit-master of the swamp in East Slavic mythology. In the Russian North, they usually talked about the female spirit of the swamp, its mistress - the bolotnitsa. The appearance of the bolotnik was described in different ways: it was either a dirty, fat, eyeless creature sitting motionless on the bottom of the swamp, or a hairy person with long arms and a tail; the bolotnitsa was imagined as a girl or an old woman. It was generally believed that the bolotnik was aggressive towards a person, trying to lure him into the quagmire and drown him. Information about bolotniks and bolotnitsa is scarce, their images were mixed with images of forest and water characters and other evil spirits. Meanwhile, in the ideas of the Slavs, the swamp was a habitat of numerous evil spirits, primarily devils.

Other names: bolotny bolotny dedko swamp jester, bolotny chert, bolotny leshy, tsar bolotny, boloto; and also antsybal/antsibul/antsibalka/antsibolit/antsibol/anchibal/anchibol, bastard, muddy; Bel. balotnik; Ukrainian bolotyanik, antsibol, netechya, ocheretyanik (from ocheret - "reed"). Antsybal - according to one version, is an old borrowing from the Baltic languages, comparable with Lith. ančiabalis - "duck swamp"; according to another version, it is a borrowing from the Czech ančibél, which could be the result of contamination of the words antikrist - "antichrist" and d'abel - "devil", and the convergence of the terminal part with swamp occurred later; according to a third version, it is the result of contraction of the expressions antikhrist swamp, antip swamp, antiy swamp through the intermediate antsibolotnik and antsibolot. In the Russian North, they usually spoke of a female spirit of the swamp, its mistress, the mistress of the tundra - a bolotnitsa, a bog woman.

However, information about bolotniks and bolotnitsa is sparse. Often, the spirit living in the swamp was considered to be just a type of water spirit, wood goblin or devil, and the image of the bolotnitsa was mixed with the images of the wood goblin, "free old woman", mermaid, water woman and bog kikimora.
