Since the 1970s, tanks have been equipped with the so-called explosive reactive armor (ERA). This armor consists of a C4 explosive sandwiched between two plates. When the armor is hit by a missile the explosive is activated and the outer plate is pushed outward towards the projectile. This action scatters the incoming projectile and prevents penetration of the tank's main armor. This reactive armor is very effective against high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) and high-explosive squash head (HESH) rounds that otherwise have very devastating effects.
