What is semantics?
Semantics is a fundamental branch of both linguistics and computer science that deals with the study of meaning in language. As a journalist with expertise in languages and computing, I can tell you that semantics is essential to understanding how humans communicate and how machines interpret and process natural language.
In the linguistic context, semantics seeks to analyze and describe how words, phrases and sentences acquire meaning and how people attribute concepts through the use of words. For example, in Spanish, the word "perro" (dog) evokes the image of a four-legged, furry pet, while the word "gato" (cat) refers to another type of pet, also with four legs, but smaller and with different physical characteristics. In addition, semantics explores how meanings can change according to the context or culture in which they are used.
In computing, semantics plays an essential role in natural language processing (NLP). Automatic understanding of human language by machines is a complex challenge, as the meaning of words and sentences can be ambiguous or context-dependent. Computational semantics seeks to develop algorithms and models that enable machines to understand the meaning of text in order to answer questions, translate languages, classify information, and perform similar tasks.
Currently, natural language processing has experienced significant progress thanks to machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence algorithms.
