Andi Brehme dead at 63: Germany legend who scored winner in 1990 World Cup final passes away.
German football is mourning the loss of the 1990 World Cup hero.
The former Germany international, who scored the winner in the 1990 World Cup final, passed away on Monday night after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Tributes from around the football world poured in after news of his passing.
Brehme's old club Bayern Munich issued a heartfelt statement after learning of their former midfielder's passing.
The German football federation, the DFB, also posted: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends." Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach added: "Our condolences go out to his relatives and friends."
"In 1990 he shot the German national team to the World Cup title with his penalty and finally became a football legend.
The FCK family is deeply saddened and its thoughts are with Andi Breme's relatives and friends. We will honour his memory."
He won 86 caps for Germany, scoring eight goals, including the one he is best remembered for in the 1990 final.
He also won the German league title with Bayern Munich while also lifting the Serie A trophy and a UEFA Cup with Inter.
"Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person. He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family.
Brehme also played for Bayern Munich and Real Zaragoza among others before retiring in 1998 following his return to Kaiserslautern and lifting the Bundesliga title with them.
Brehme is survived by his partner Susanne Schaefer and his sons Ricardo and Alessio from his marriage to Pilar Martinez.
