That the actors in the show had to adopt a rather nasty habit for filming purposes? One of the most distict aesthetic aspects of the hit BBC show is the amount of cigarettes that the characters in Peaky Blinders smoke during the course of the series. The habit is indicative of the era that Peaky Blinders depicts, but many of the show’s actors, including Cillian Murphy, who plays Tommy Shelby, were required to smoke a lot during production. However, while some actors smoked real tobacco cigarettes, Murphy decided to smoke a nicotine-free alternative, and said “I use herbal rose things, they’re like my five a day!” Due to the excessive amount of smoking that the Shelby brothers partake in, Murphy had to smoke a lot of herbal cigarettes, and he has been quoted as saying that he smoked over “three thousand” during one series alone. That sure is dedication to a role!
