Photoshop layers let you separate parts of an image or graphic out and work on them independently of each other. It's done by making a kind of layered sandwich from whatever areas you want to work on. You can move these layers up or down in the stack, save different versions to see which you like the best.

In this video I'll explain layers and how incredibly useful they are and how to set up your layers palett. Look out for how to use Photoshop layers 2 which is coming soon where I'll show you some practical applications for them. There'll be a link in the video when it does so you can find it.
