This past week India witnessed its worst train accident in decades. The three train collision in Balasore on Friday claimed at least 275 lives and over 1000 were injured. A preliminary investigation has pointed to signalling failure as the probable cause of the accident.

A CAG audit report from last year had flagged many specific, systemic concerns relating to railway safety. Among other things, the audit highlighted what it said was an increasing trend towards expenditure on non-priority works against the guiding principles of Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK) deployment framework.The RRSK is the railway safety fun, The question we are asking today is, could the Odisha train tragedy have been averted? Alok Kumar Verma who retired from the Indian Railway Service of Engineers joins us on the programme.
