2:16 Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS)
2:48 How to stimulate the vagus nerve
In this video, I’m going to tell you how to trigger the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is one of the longest nerves in the body. It originates from the brainstem and goes through the entire thorax, innervating the heart and digestive organs.
The vagus nerve is a part of the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for rest and digestion, while the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for fight or flight. Oftentimes, people have a strong sympathetic nervous system and a weak parasympathetic nervous system due to excessive stress.
Pharmaceutical companies have developed electroceutical devices to stimulate the vagus nerve. The Vagus Nerve Stimulation Device is placed on the chest and stimulates the vagus nerve with small shocks. This is used to treat migraines, headaches, fibromyalgia, inflammation, Crohn’s, depression, and epilepsy. Unfortunately, these devices are invasive, they’re not very effective, and they come with side effects.
Here’s how to trigger the vagus nerve, and also strengthen and support the parasympathetic nervous system:
1. Slow controlled breathing—4 to 5 seconds in, and 4 to 5 seconds out
2. Long walks
3. Include adequate potassium, magnesium, and sodium in your diet
4. Acupressure techniques
