This is a remix of Giles Martin's 2023 official remix of The Beatles' classic "I Am The Walrus." He likely received more criticism for this remix than any other, as many felt he strayed too far from the original. With this in mind, I aimed to bring his remix closer to the original while still incorporating his improvements and capturing the essence of the 1967 stereo recording. For example, in my remix, you'll notice the long fade-out sounds more like the original, as this is where Giles added extra sounds that weren't part of the original. If they were present, they were buried so deeply that no one could hear them.
In the first half of the recording, I removed the phasing effects from John Lennon's lead vocal. Giles added phasing in the first half, likely to match the prominent phasing effects in the second half. To me, this phase shift beginning in the second half is an essential characteristic of the song. Originally, phasing, or flanging, was used to carry the stereo image throughout the entire song. The added on-air radio transmissions were placed within the recording live during the 1967 mono mix, which couldn't be recreated during the stereo mix, so faux stereo was employed from the mono to maintain a somewhat stereo image. The only other change I made in this part of the recording was to fix the drop in cello volume that connects the first half with the second. Perhaps this drop was intentional, but it isn't present in the original.
The final change I made was to make the long fade-out sound more like the original. As mentioned earlier, this is where Giles made artistic decisions that frustrated many long-time listeners who couldn't accept such a drastic change.
This project has been my most requested, and I have to admit I was very reluctant to approach it. I'm one of the few who enjoyed Giles' remix, but the original will always be my favorite. However, once I realized that his changes could be applied in a way that stayed true to the original, I accepted the challenge! This was a tough one, and I truly hope you enjoy it. Either way, thanks for listening!
