Miguel has always been a couple steps ahead of the game. That’s the reason his progressive brand of R&B remains just as fresh now as it did in 2010, when the smooth-singing Los Angeleno eased onto the scene with ‘All I Want Is You.’ Aging like fine wine, “Sure Thing” remains a top shelf classic thanks to ingenious sound design and sexual panache. Two years later, ‘Kaleidoscope Dreams’ foretold the experimental and gritty production style that would come to dominate groove music throughout the decade. “Adorn” and “How Many Drinks?” (and honestly most of Miguel’s repertoire) remain ultimate bedroom jams. By the time ‘War & Leisure’ arrived in 2017, dude had all the cool kids - Travis Scott, Kali Uchis, J. Cole, Kacey Musgraves, and Tame Impala - on speed dial. So what does one do having already built a mansion on an entire genre’s mountaintop? Well, it’s always a good idea to come down and show off your bona fides.
