Basic Disk vs Dynamic Disk | Disk Management in Windows XP

Caution: Please make sure to backup your data first.

In this video, we will create multiple partitions using Disk Management window, and we will talk about the differences between Basic Disk and Dynamic Disk. We used Disk Management window in Windows XP Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.

In Basic Disk, we can have up to 4 Primary Partitions, or we can have 3 Primary Partitions and one Extended Partition. The Primary Partitions can be active partition, so we can install O.S on Primary Partitions, and they can be boot able. The Extended Partition is just a place holder for the logical drives. Inside Extended Partition, we can have multiple logical drives.

In Dynamic Disk, we can create volumes, and regardless of whether the dynamic disks on a system use the MBR or GPT partition style, we can create up to 2,000 dynamic volumes on a system, although the recommended number of dynamic volumes is 32 or less.
