An Asheville high school student was taken to the hospital this morning after being attacked by a naked man. It happened near the Asheville High School campus around 8 a.m. as the sophomore was walking to school.
School Officials say the student was on McDowell Street when he was attacked by an man wearing no clothes. Two teachers witnessed the assault and went over to aid the student. The school resource officer arrived moments later as well as Asheville Police officers. The man was apprehended at the spot of the attack. School administrators tell us today's incident did not spark a lock down, but it did temporarily close several lanes of traffic on McDowell Street.
Officers tell News 13 a teacher and student resource officer were bitten by Rogers. The student was taken to Mission Hospital.
"I don't have any details on the injuries. I don't think it is serious. That's the latest indications I'm getting but he was taken to mission hospital taken by ambulance. So we're concerned but it's looking good," said Charlie Glazener with Asheville City Schools.
There's no information on if the teacher or SRO went to the hospital for treatment.
In a press release, Asheville Police say 21-year-old Timothy Leo Rogers escaped from Mission Hospital trauma unit, where he was receiving treatment for a stab wound.
Completely nude, he approached a student near Asheville High School and assaulted him.
School staff attempted to subdue Rogers and one teacher was bitten.
APD's SRO arrived on scene and was also bitten by Rogers.
The SRO quickly placed Rogers into custody.
Warrants were obtained on the individual for the assault(s) and will be served as soon as he is released from the hospital.
