X-rays are produced when high-energy electrons, accelerated through a potential difference, collide with a target material. Here’s a basic outline of the process:

1. **Electron Acceleration**: Electrons are accelerated from a cathode (negative electrode) towards an anode (positive electrode) in a vacuum tube by applying a high voltage.

2. **Collision with Target**: When these high-energy electrons strike the target material (usually tungsten), several interactions can occur:
**Bremsstrahlung Radiation**: This is the primary mechanism for X-ray production. When the high-speed electron passes near the nucleus of a target atom, it decelerates and changes direction, emitting energy in the form of X-rays.
**Characteristic X-rays**: Some electrons from the incident electron beam may knock inner-shell electrons out of the target atoms. Outer-shell electrons then fill these vacancies, emitting characteristic X-rays with energies specific to the target material.

3. **X-ray Emission**: The X-rays produced have a range of energies depending on the interactions between the incident electrons and the atoms in the target material.

4. **Filtering and Collimation**: To produce X-rays of a specific energy range and direction, filters and collimators are used to select and direct the desired X-rays towards the patient or detector.

In medical and industrial applications, X-rays are used for imaging purposes because they can penetrate through soft tissues but are absorbed by denser materials like bones or metal. This differential absorption allows for the creation of diagnostic images in medicine or detection of structural flaws in industrial materials.
