How Putin is chasing Stalin in terms of repression scale
Vladimir Putin likes to repeat that Russia is not in 1937 - that is, there are no mass political repressions in the country. In some respects he is indeed right - modern Russia has not yet reached the scale of Stalin's terror. But it has already exceeded the indicators of the Khrushchev and Brezhnev periods. We found this out as part of our large-scale study of repression during Putin's last term - according to the most conservative estimate, 116,000 people have been subjected to political persecution since 2018.
