Remember the popular mobile gaming app Angry Birds? Well, the company that makes it is in talks to be acquired for $775M by this big Japanese entertainment corporation.
Rovio is a publicly-traded entertainment company from Finland. They emerged as one of the major success stories from the European tech sphere when one of their games; Angry Birds became a global hit. Rovio has dozens of mobile games in its portfolio with its Angry Birds franchise generating over $1 billion on mobile and spans to film, toys, and other products.
Sega, the Japanese company behind Sonic the Hedgehog and one of the original gaming consoles is the one buying Rovio. They also currently operate dozens of mobile games with over 1 billion downloads and a total revenue of around $1.78 billion.
This acquisition is a strategic move for Sega so they can accelerate their growth in the global games market. With the deal, they’ll get Rovio’s internal developer platform: Beacon, so they can better create and optimize their development in games.
