I once lived for a while in the city of Kyoto. It was a truly valuable experience for me.I rode my bicycle around to many places, but at that time, I didn’t take any videos—I simply spent my days observing the world around me.Or perhaps “feeling” is a better word than “observing.” Decades have passed since then, as I’ve continued my work in architecture. And now, once again, I feel a sincere desire to reflect on Kyoto.
In Japan, Kyoto is often said to have a certain 'SHIKII NO TAKASA'....a kind of social or cultural threshold that can be hard to cross.Even for Japanese people, visiting Kyoto’s most prestigious establishments can require courage, knowledge, experience, connections, and effort. On the other hand, the warmth and sincerity of people running small shops in traditional 'MACHIYA' townhouses has remained unchanged over the years.
Starting today, I plan to create a few videos to reflect on Kyoto and preserve some thoughts through images. In this first installment, I’d like to focus on two towers: Kyoto Tower and the Five-Storied Pagoda of Tō-ji Temple.Perhaps, in some way, these two towers have helped shape the image of the city itself. They have watched over Kyoto for a very long time—and that makes them enduring symbols of the city.
The music was born in a park, under the watchful ears of birds.
Their songs wove into my guitar, and for a moment, we shared the air.
Later, soft piano lines grew around that memory—
a quiet dialogue between two towers.
I hope you feel it too.
