Workers continue to rebuild a slope that failed and cracked the Blue Ridge Parkway. They re now building a road that will allow traffic to bypass the repairs. That temporary two lane road is about the length of a football field and it will allow rangers to reopen the road when it s completed. Truck drivers are hauling gravel and bulldozer operators are working through periods of heavy rain to prepare for two lane traffic. In less than a week, crews have removed trees and cut into the mountainside to make room for the additional lanes. They re also working to repair a drainage system that failed last month and allowed the slope to slump. Crews worked through a downpour around noon as they unloaded and graded gravel on the temporary road. Parkway officials say workers can t get as much done when it rains, but they don t expect the weather to get in the way of reopening the parkway by Labor Day.
